On 1 January 2014, the EU introduced a reformed Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). One of the key aspects of the reforms announced was the introduction of a Landing Obligation, which is more commonly known as the Discard Ban. This reform will be gradually introduced on a fishery-by-fishery basis until 2019. The ban is intended to reduce incidences of fish being returned to the sea, often dead or dying, as a result of the quota system.
